Why You Should Build a Squirrel Box

Squirrel Boxes Provide Protection.

As much as I love being able to hold my little Squirrel, Lucky, a part of me is deeply saddened by the fact that she will never be free to explore the trees and yards of my neighborhood! A Squirrel Nesting Box would have made the difference!

Her blindness was a direct result of either the fall from her mother's nest or brain anoxia from cessation of breathing. The bottom line is, her injuries would not have happened if her mother could have had her litter in a natural tree den or a Squirrel Box. Tree dens are in limited supply in healthy trees, so Squirrel Boxes are a logical alternative to provide security for newborns.

If Lucky had been born in a secure Squirrel Box, the Crows would have never been able to get to her or her siblings. That's why everyone should have one or two Squirrel Boxes up in their trees before the birthing season starts in March and July.

Squirrels Are Vulnerable In Several Ways.

Without a Squirrel Box, a nesting female squirrel is vulnerable in several ways. First from the weather. Highwinds and heavy rain can tear a leaf nest, or drey apart causing newborn squirrels to be blown from the nest.

Predatory and opportunistic animals like Hawks and Crows can tear leaf nests apart in search of juvenile squirrel to eat. A Squirrel Box prevents weather and predation from being a factor in Squirrel survival. Squirrels are already low on the food chain. A healthy squirrel population is necessary for the health of all animals up the food chain!

Squirrel Nesting Boxes Are Not Hard To Make!

For those of you who are handy with wood, we offer FREE, easy to follow plans for constructing a Squirrel Nesting Box. There is no charge for these plans, but any donation to Squirrel Haven rehabilitation facility would be greatly appreciated!

For those who don't have the time, we offer a quality Cedar Squirrel Box on our Squirrel Care Products Page.

Whatever your choice, it's imperitive that you get some Squirrel Boxes up because breeding season starts in December, and females need time to prepare their birthing location in time for an early March delivery!

To obtain your FREE Plans, please provide the information below. Type "PLANS" in the Message Field! Plans will be sent in PDF Format by return e-mail!

Donations are gratefully accepted to help run our Squirrel Haven Rescue facility! We receive no financial help from our State or our State Wildlife Organization. Training through our State Wildlife Rehabilitation Organization was obtained at our own expense! Thanks for your consideration!
