Laverne

On Thursday, September 24th. Laverne and her sister made it to the front porch of my house. Actually, one of them showed up Wednesday afternoon and was attracted to our two boys, Ozzie and Ricky while they were playing in their cage. My wife called me at work to inform me of the new arrival, but when I got home, the baby was gone.

The next morning I went out to investigate and to move the boys back out on the porch. An hour or two later, I went out to check on the boys and spotted one of the baby girls on the porch. She ran away when I came out, so I tried to entice her with a piece of pecan. She would have nothing to do with me or the pecan! So, I got the idea to come back into the house and take Lucky back out with me. I sat down on the steps with Lucky on my shoulder. As soon as Laverne saw Lucky, she walked up on the step I was sitting on and came right up to me and allowed me to pick her up!

I estimate that Laverne is around 8 weeks old and may have left her mother's nest a bit early either because her mother was killed, or she was spending so much time “squirreling-away” food that she became hungry and set out to find food for herself! At any rate, she and her sister will be wintering over with us and will be released when the weather gets mild in the spring!
