I recently received word that my views on raising squirrels is considered totally wrong in certain circles. Most of these circles involve people who claim that feeding a squirrel scalded cows milk is poisonous to the animal and will kill them. I don't know where they are getting that information other than they are "in the pocket" of some company that wants to hold exclusive rights and authority to what is best to feed a squirrel, and as a result, want to scare all "would-be" care givers of orphaned squirrels into thinking that the only way you can successfully raise a squirrel is to feed them a very expensive puppy replacement formula.
All I know and claim is that I tried several suggestions from ,"so-called," animal rehabilitation "experts," and nearly killed my squirrel as a result. ( Yet, I don't hear a word coming out of the critics of my site condemning these people for purposefully giving "bogus" and deadly information out to people who are trying to help a squirrel survive!)
In my ignorance, I went the route of the expensive puppy replacement formula, and although my squirrel survived, she started to appear dull and lifeless when she was weaning off the formula. It wasn't until I switched my squirrel to scalded whole cow's milk with 200mg of Vitamin E added per cup, and supplementing her with nut balls, that she made a dramatic "turn-around" within one week! I have photographic proof and a very lively and active squirrel to prove it, who is now thriving on a diet of bright colored vegetables, occasional pecans, walnuts and hickory nuts, and one nut ball per day.
In addition, I am not, nor ever have been associated with a Ms. Clarissa Summers. I've never met her, nor have I ever contacted her. But, I do owe her a debt of gratitude for freely giving me the information that I needed to radically change the appearance, disposition and health of my squirrel!
